Origin: A borrowing from Narragansett. Etymon: Narragansett pequttôog.
Etymology: < Narragansett pequttôog (plural), perhaps ‘people of the shoals’ (compare Eastern Abenaki pìkwat a shallow, píkwatohs (diminutive) shoal). Compare Dutch Pequat, singular (1616 as PEQVAT on a Dutch map).
