Etymology: < classical Latin per impossibile by impossibility (probably 2nd cent. a.d.: see note) < per per prep. + impossibile , use as noun of neuter of impossibilis (see impossible adj.).Classical Latin per impossibile is recorded in a work attributed to Apuleius (2nd cent. a.d.) by Cassiodorus (6th cent.); the work may be genuine. In logic the phrase translates ancient Greek διὰ τοῦ ἀδυνάτου (Aristotle). With reduction per impossibile (see quot. 1847) compare post-classical Latin demonstratio ad impossibile (1344 in a British source).
