Etymology: < Anglo-Norman penitancer, penitauncer and Middle French penitencier (French pénitencier ) priest having the authority to hear confession (13th cent. in Old French), priest in a cathedral church appointed by the bishop or pope to absolve reserved cases (1530), person doing penance (first half of the 15th cent.) < pénitence penitence n. + -ier -ier suffix (compare -er suffix2), after post-classical Latin paenitentiarius , poenitentiarius penitentiary n.1
Obsolete (historical in later use).
1. Esp. in the medieval Church: a priest appointed or delegated to hear confession, administer penance, and give absolution in extraordinary cases. Cf. penitentiary n.1 1.
