Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: proper name Pennant , pendant n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < a place name, or perhaps an alteration of pendant n. Pennant is a common place name in Wales and also occurs in south-western England. Compare pendle n.2An alternative etymology suggesting derivation directly < Welsh pennant upland, head of a valley (the etymon of the place name; Old Welsh pennant < pen head (see pen n.1) + nant valley, stream: see nant n.) is unlikely on semantic grounds. The English sense of pennant is not attested in Welsh.
More fully pennant grit. Any of a series of grit and sandstone strata lying between the upper and lower coal measures in South Wales and the Bristol area; stone from these strata used for paving, millstones, etc. Also pennant flag, pennant rock, pennant stone, etc.
