Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perfidiōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin perfidiōsus faithless, treacherous < perfidia perfidy n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Catalan perfidiós (c1460), Spanish †porfidioso (1230), perfidioso (19th cent.; 1450 in an isolated attestation), both in sense ‘obstinate, rebellious’, Italian perfidioso (14th cent.). Compare also Middle French, French perfide (1580; second half of the 10th cent. in Old French in an apparently isolated attestation), Spanish pérfido (second half of the 13th cent.), Italian perfido (1268).
Characterized by perfidy; guilty of breaking faith or violating confidence; deliberately faithless; treacherous. Also occasionally as n.: a perfidious person.
