Etymology: < Middle French, French perfidie treacherous word or act (c1510 as perfidye ), treacherous character (1580) < classical Latin perfidia faithlessness, treachery, (plural) examples of faithlessness < perfidus that breaks faith or promise, faithless, treacherous ( < per- per- prefix + fidēs faith: see faith n. and int.) + -ia -y suffix3. Compare Spanish perfidia (late 14th cent.; also perfía (1293), porfía (1240–50)), Catalan perfídia (1647; also porfia (13th cent.)), Italian perfidia (1258). Compare earlier perfidious adj.
