Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh pennill.
Etymology: < Welsh pennill verse, stanza (14th cent.), stall in a stable (13th cent.; also occasionally penhill ; plural penillion ), apparently cognate with Old Breton pentil pigsty, further etymology uncertain, perhaps < pen head (see pen n.1) + a second element of unknown origin.The stable was also used as accommodation for farmworkers and hence as a place of entertainment. Compare the more recent Welsh caneuon llofft stabal, literally ‘stable loft songs’, a type of popular song.
An improvised Welsh verse sung to a harp accompaniment; a stanza of such verse. Usually in plural.
