Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French par pais.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman par pais before witnesses, before a jury (1st half of 14th cent. or earlier) < par , per through, by (see per prep.) + pais jury (first half of 14th cent. or earlier in this sense: see pais n.).
Law. Now historical.
Esp. with reference to a criminal trial: before or by one's fellow countrymen, esp. as represented by a jury. Chiefly in trial per pais. Cf. country n. 7 and the note there.
