Etymology: < post-classical Latin per pares (late 13th cent. in British sources in legal context; more fully per pares suos by his or her peers) < classical Latin per per prep. + parēs , accusative plural of pār a person of equal rank (see peer n.). Compare Middle French par mes pers by my peers (1385 in a legal context).The phrase used in the Magna Carta (see quot. 1593) is in fact post-classical Latin iudicium parium (1215).

Law. Obsolete.

Esp. with reference to a criminal trial: by one's peers.
