Etymology: < scientific Latin Peracarida, superorder name (W. T. Calman 1904, in Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 13 150) < ancient Greek πήρα pouch (see peridium n.) + καρίς shrimp, prawn (see Caridea n.) + scientific Latin -ida (see -id suffix³). Compare earlier peracaridan n. and adj.
