Etymology: < Middle French perçant piercing (1342 of a look), present participle of percer pierce v.Some of the Middle English forms could alternatively be interpreted as forms of piercing adj. showing -and suffix1. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pə̄·ɹsănt) /ˈpɜːsənt/.
rare after 17th cent. (archaic in later use).
Penetrating, sharp, keen, piercing. Chiefly figurative.
