Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perigeum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin perigeum, perigaeum (although this is apparently first attested later in this sense: from 1620 in British sources; earlier in sense ‘base’ in heraldic use (c1595)) < Hellenistic Greek περίγειον perigee (Ptolemy), use as noun (short for περίγειον σημεῖον ) of neuter of περίγειος (adjective) near the earth < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + γῆ (poetic form γαῖα ) the earth (see geo- comb. form). Compare perigee n.
