Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perigynium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin perigynium (H. F. Link Grundlehren der Anal. u. Physiol. der Pflantzen (1807) 221) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek γυνή (see -gynous comb. form) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). N.E.D. (1905) also records the anglicized form perigyne, with the pronunciation (pe·ridʒin) /ˈpɛrɪdʒɪn/.
Botany.
A structure surrounding the ovary or archegonium of a plant; spec. an inflated membranous sac (utricle) surrounding the ovary in sedges. Also: the perichaetium of a moss; the perianth of a liverwort.
