Etymology: < post-classical Latin perihelium (J. Kepler Astronomia Nova (1609) 32) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek ἥλιος sun (see helio- comb. form), after post-classical Latin perigeum perigeum n.; subsequently altered in form to perihelion after Greek nouns in -ον. Compare French périhélie (1690).
1. Astronomy. The point in the orbit of a planet, comet, etc., at which it is nearest to the sun. Opposed to aphelion n.
