Etymology: < ancient Greek περὶ ἑρμηνείας on interpretation, title of a treatise by Aristotle ( < περί (see peri- prefix) + ἑρμηνείας , genitive of ἑρμηνεία interpretation < ἑρμηνεύς interpreter (see hermeneut n.) + -ία -ia suffix1) + -al suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin perihermenia interpretation (6th cent.), usually in plural, probably arising from a reinterpretation of perihermenias as an accusative plural. Compare perihermiacal adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pe:rihəɹmī·niăl) /ˌpɛrɪhəˈmiːnɪəl/.
Obsolete. rare.
Relating to or characteristic of the principles of interpretation set out in Aristotle's treatise Περὶ ἑρμηνείας ( Concerning Interpretation); of or relating to interpretation.
