Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: peri- prefix, Jove n.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + Jove n., after French périjove (Bailly Essai (1766) 80). Compare earlier perigee n., perihelion n. Compare also apojove n.Compare apparently isolated earlier use of perijovium in this sense:1764 R. Long Astron. II. 451 The point where the satellit approaches nearest to jupiter is called its perijovium.

That point in the path of a celestial object or spacecraft orbiting (or passing) Jupiter at which it is nearest to the planet.
