Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Phalaecius , -ean suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Phalaecius, designating the hendecasyllabic metre used by the poet Phalaecus ( < the name of Phalaecus (Hellenistic Greek Φάλαικος ), Greek poet (fl. c300 b.c.) + -ius , suffix forming adjectives) + -ean suffix. With use as noun compare classical Latin Phalaecium , Hellenistic Greek Φαλαίκειον (short for Φαλαίκειον μέτρον ). Compare earlier Phaleuciac n., Phaleuciac adj., Phaleucian adj.With the form Phalaecian compare -ian suffix.

1922 Classical Q. 16 119 Editors commonly divide after γενέσθαι.., giving a Phalaecian hendecasyllable.
