Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element;perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin phalang- , phalanx , -ean suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phalang-, phalanx phalanx n. (see phalanx n. 4) + -ean suffix, perhaps after French phalangien (1814 in this sense: see phalangian adj.3). Compare scientific Latin phalangeus (see phalangeal adj.). Compare earlier phalangal adj., phalangar adj., phalangeal adj., phalangial adj., phalangian adj.3, and phalangic adj.
Anatomy and Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
