Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phalāris.
Etymology: < classical Latin phalāris (also phalēris ) canary grass or a similar grass < Hellenistic Greek ϕαλᾱρίς (Attic-Ionic ϕαληρίς ) < Byzantine Greek (Doric) ϕαλᾱρός (compare Hellenistic Greek (Doric) ϕάλᾱρος , (Attic-Ionic) ϕάληρος ) white, having a patch of white ( < ϕαλός white, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as bald adj.) + -ις -id suffix2.
Originally: canary grass ( Phalaris canariensis). Later: (in form Phalaris) a genus of annual and perennial grasses native to temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, having flat leaves and compact panicles of one-flowered spikelets; (also phalaris) any grass of this genus, esp. P. canariensis, P. arundinacea (reed canary grass or gardener's garters), and (Agriculture) P. aquatica, used as a drought-resistant forage grass, esp. in Australia.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 54.

1946 I. W. McDonald in Austral. Vet. Jrnl. 22 91/2 A disease of sheep and cattle characterized by profound nervous symptoms and degenerative changes in the central nervous system was described. The disease was associated with the consumption of the perennial grass Phalaris tuberosa and thus had become colloquially known as ‘phalaris staggers’.
1970 K. V. F. Jubb & P. C. Kennedy Pathol. Domest. Animals (ed. 2) II. vii. 387/2 The lesser syndrome, known as phalaris staggers, occurs when the plant is in lush growth and in 3–10 days after animals are given access to such pasture. Affected sheep appear normal when quiet, but, when disturbed, they show stiffness, incoordination, a staggering gait, and a tendency to fall.
