Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin phalarismus; Greek ϕαλαρισμός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phalarismus (a1536 in Erasmus) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek ϕαλαρισμός cruelty like that of Phalaris (only recorded in the classical Latin author Cicero) < ancient Greek Φάλαρις , the name of the tyrant of Agrigentum (ruled 570–554 b.c.), who caused those condemned to death by him to be roasted alive in a brazen bull, the maker himself being the first victim + -ισμός -ism suffix.
Obsolete.
Inhuman cruelty; pleasure in the infliction of torture; an instance of this.
