Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phalarope.
Etymology: < French phalarope (1760 in Brisson: see below), irregularly < scientific Latin Phalaropus (M. J. Brisson Ornithologia (1760) VI. 12) < ancient Greek ϕαλᾱρίς (Attic-Ionic ϕαληρίς ) coot ( < Byzantine Greek (Doric) ϕαλᾱρός having a patch of white: see phalaris n.) + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form), probably after coot-footed tringa at coot n.1 Compounds.
Any one of three small, migratory, northern shorebirds constituting the genus Phalaropus and the subfamily Phalaropodinae (family Scolopacidae), which have lobed feet (enabling habitual swimming) and are noted for their reversal of usual sexual roles, the males being less colourful than the females and taking care of the eggs and young.grey, northern, red, red-necked, Wilson's phalarope: see the first element.
