Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕαλλικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕαλλικός < ϕαλλός penis (see phallos n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare classical Latin phallicus, designating a poetic meter, used for verses composed in honour of Bacchus, French phallique (1604; 1922 in psychoanalysis), Italian fallico (1534).Compare the following earlier examples of Latin phallica in English context, denoting verses and a festival in honour of Dionysus (Bacchus), respectively:1637 F. Rous Archæologia Atticæ 84 The other sort [of verses] was Iambicks as toying and lascivious as the Phallica, but biting too, & from hence came a Comoedy.1671 M. D'Assigny in tr. P. Gautruche Poet.
