Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pensee.
Etymology: < Middle French pensee thought (late 12th cent. in Old French as pansee ; compare Anglo-Norman pensee ; French pensée ), reflection, meditation (c1260 in Old French), anxious care (14th cent. in the phrase estre en pensée por to be concerned about (a person)), use as noun of feminine of past participle of penser to think (see pense v.2).It is unclear whether the following quot. represents an instance of the word ( Middle Eng. Dict. s.v. pensīf interprets it as the only instance of a noun meaning ‘care, sorrow’ < pensive adj. or pensy adj.):a1500 (a1400) Sir Cleges (Adv.) (1930) 180 Whan service was don, hom they went, And thanked God with god entent, And put away penci [rhyme wiffe, stryffe, lyf].
