Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian pensiero.
Etymology: < Italian pensiero thought, idea, anxiety (a1300 as pensero ), sketch for a work of art (a1775, referring to architecture) < Old Occitan pensier thought, chagrin, anxiety, intention (12th cent.) < pensar to think (see pense v.2) + -ier , suffix forming abstract nouns (probably ultimately < classical Latin -ērium , in e.g. desidērium desiderium n.).Not fully naturalized in English.
