Etymology: < post-classical Latin pentachordum scale of five notes (5th cent.) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek πεντάχορδον scale of five notes, instrument with five strings, use as noun of neuter of πεντάχορδος having five strings < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + χορδή chord n.1 Compare Italian pentacordo musical instrument with five strings (1556), scale of five notes (1581), French †pentachorde, pentacorde scale of five notes (1705), musical instrument with five strings (1721).
