Etymology: < French péristyle colonnade surrounding the interior court of a building (1546 in Middle French; also as peristile (1611 in Cotgrave)), colonnade surrounding the exterior of a building (1694) < classical Latin peristȳlum inner courtyard lined with rows of columns < Hellenistic Greek περίστυλον colonnade round a temple or court, area surrounded by a colonnade, use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek περίστυλος having pillars all round, surrounded by a colonnade < περι- peri- prefix + στῦλος pillar (see styloid adj.).
