Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perisystole.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin perisystole (1649 or earlier) < peri- peri- prefix + Hellenistic Greek συστολή contraction (see systole n.). Compare earlier systole n.
Physiology. Now rare or disused.
The brief interval between successive heartbeats, or between each systole and diastole.
