Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bat n.1, fish n.1
Etymology: < bat n.1 + fish n.1In sense 1 used of fishes with broad horizontal fins likened to the wings of a bat; in sense 2 used of fishes with vertical fins perhaps similarly regarded (compare scientific Latin Chaetodon vespertilio (Bloch 1787) = Platax orbicularis). With sense 3 compare water bat n. at water n. Compounds 8c and the Latin name given there (the fish, having a large head, small body, and arm-like fins, was perhaps thought to resemble a bat on the ground).

a. Chiefly Caribbean (Barbados) and U.S. A flying gurnard, Dactylopterus volitans (family Dactylopteridae), of warm temperate Atlantic and Mediterranean waters, having greatly enlarged pectoral fins resembling wings, which it expands to deter predators. Obsolete.
