Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French piédouche.
Etymology: < French piédouche (1676) < Italian pieduccio (1373 in architecture) < piede foot ( < classical Latin ped- , pēs : see -ped comb. form) + -uccio , diminutive suffix. Compare Italian piedestallo pedestal n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (pyedu·ʃ) /pjeduʃ/.
Architecture. Obsolete.

1704 J. Harris Lexicon Technicum I Piedouche, in Architecture, is a little Square Base smoothed, and wrought with Mouldings, which serves to support a Bust or Statue drawn half way, or any small Figure in Relief.
