Etymology: < pie n.1 + finch n.Attested earlier in surnames, as Thomas Pyvynche (1526), Thomas Pyffynche (1539), William Pywynge (1542), Fabian Pyvinch (1663), etc.
English regional (chiefly midlands).
The chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs. Cf. pied finch n. (a) at pied adj.1 and n. Compounds 1b.
