Etymology: < Afrikaans perlemoen, either alteration by folk etymology (after pêrel pearl n.1 and lemoen orange (see lemon n.1)) of †perlemoer ( < Dutch parelmoer (also paarlemoer , perlemoer ) mother-of-pearl (see mother pearl n.)), or perhaps < Dutch regional parlemoen, peerlemoen, perelmoen, variants of parelmoer (see above).The form paarlmoer (probably reflecting a South African Dutch form) is recorded earlier in an English context:1853 L. Pappe Synopsis Edible Fishes Cape Good Hope 12 Amongst the mollusca, none are more eagerly caught, and none have such a deserved reputation as Haliotis Midae Lin. (Klipkous; Sea-ear), and a species of Stomatia (Paarlmoer). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (pɒ̄rləmu·n) /pɜːrləˈmʊn/. Dict. S. Afr. Eng. on Historical Princ. (1996) records also the variants paarlemoen, perelomen.
