Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕιλόδημος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕιλόδημος friend of the commons ( < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + δῆμος the people: see deme n.2) + -ic suffix.The Philodemic Debate Society was founded at Georgetown University in on 2nd October 1830 as the Debating Society of Georgetown College.
Chiefly U.S.
Characterized by concern for ordinary people; originally and chiefly in the name of the debating society of Georgetown University, D.C.
