Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Philodina.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Philodina, genus name (C. G. Ehrenberg 1830, in Abhandl. der K. Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin 68–9) < philo- philo- comb. form + ancient Greek δῖνος whirling, rotation (see dinus n.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (fi·lŏdəin) /ˈfɪlədaɪn/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
A bdelloid rotifer of the genus Philodina or family Philodinidae.
