Forms: 1600s– philogynist, 1700s philogynist (irregular).
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Greek ϕιλογύνης , -ist suffix; philogyny n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: Either < ancient Greek ϕιλογύνης fond of women (see philogyny n.) + -ist suffix, or < philogyny n. + -ist suffix. Compare earlier misogynist n.
Now rare.
A person, esp. a man, who is fond of or admires women.
