Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French philomatique.
Etymology: < French philomatique (1791 in Société philomatique , the name of a learned society: compare quot. 1797; also 1799 or earlier, and now usually, as philomathique ) < ancient Greek ϕιλομάθεια , ϕιλομαθία love of learning (see philomathy n.) + French -ique -ic suffix. Compare earlier philomathical adj.
Now chiefly historical.
Of, belonging to, or consisting of philomaths; relating or devoted to mathematics, natural philosophy, etc.Originally and chiefly in the names of learned societies.
