Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕιλομάθεια.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕιλομάθεια, ϕιλομαθία love of learning < ϕιλομαθής fond of learning (see philomath n.) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare Italian †philomathia (1598 in Florio, but apparently not recorded elsewhere in dictionaries of Italian), French †philomathie (1828), German †Philomathie (1818 in a journal title, rare). Compare slightly earlier philomath n.
