Etymology: < pernicious adj.1 + anaemia n., after German perniciöse Anämie (A. Biermer 1868: see Correspondenzblatt f. Schweiz. Aerzte (1872) 1 Jan. 15; now perniziöse Anämie).
Medicine.
A severe, progressive form of megaloblastic anaemia, potentially fatal if untreated, caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12, most commonly resulting from lack of intrinsic factor in association with chronic atrophic gastritis. Also called Addisonian anaemia (see Addisonian anaemia n. at Addisonian adj.2 Compounds).
