Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Occitan, combined with an English element. Etymons: petty adj., Occitan greu.
Etymology: Apparently < petty adj. + Occitan greu holly, aphetic < agreu (Old Occitan agrefol ) < post-classical Latin acrifolus (6th–8th cent.), variant of acrifolium (5th cent.; < classical Latin ācris sharp, piercing (see acrid adj.) + folium leaf: see foil n.1); compare classical Latin aquifolium (Pliny; < acus needle (see acicula n.) + folium ). Compare Catalan grèvol (1617). Compare French petit houx in the same sense ( < petit petit adj. + houx : see hollin n.).
