Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French petite.
Etymology: < French petite (late 17th cent. or earlier in specific use in sense A. 1a), feminine of petit (see petit adj.). In sense A. 3 after French petite (in petite colonie, B. Ephrussi et al. 1949, in Annales de l'Inst. Pasteur 77 64).Sense A. 1b is apparently not paralleled in French.
