Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French petite mort.
Etymology: < French petite mort fainting fit (1572), nervous spasm (1831 or earlier), orgasm (1882) < petite , feminine of petit (see petit adj.) + mort death (see mort n.1). Compare later little death n. at little adj., pron., n., and adv. Compounds 1d, and petit mort n.
The brief loss or weakening of consciousness. Now: spec. the sensation of orgasm as likened to death; an orgasm. Cf. little death n. at little adj., pron., n., and adv. Compounds 1d. Also la petite mort.
