Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: German Phanerogame; Latin Phanerogamae.
Etymology: < German Phanerogame, plural (1861 in the passage translated in quot. 1861) or its etymon scientific Latin Phanerogamae, plural (Humboldt, Nova Gen. et Sp. Plant., 1815), use as noun (short for plantae phanerogamae ) of feminine plural of phanerogamus , adjective (1805 or earlier; compare note below) < phanero- phanero- comb. form + ancient Greek γάμος (see -gam comb. form). Compare French phanérogames , plural (1813), use as noun of phanérogame , adjective (1791 in plantes phanérogames ); also Swedish fanerogamer , plural (1838 in a work title). Compare earlier Phanerogamia n., phanerogamic adj., phanerogamous adj., and cryptogam n.H. Cottez Dict. des structures du vocab. savant (ed. 4, 1985) at phanéro- attributes scientific Latin phanerogama to A. v. Haller (1768), but this has not been verified.
