Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu phãsīgar.
Etymology: < Urdu phãsīgar strangler < phãsī noose ( < Sanskrit pāśikā, diminutive of pāśa) + Persian -gār, -gar, agent suffix.
Now historical.
A member of a society or cult of professional robbers and murderers who strangled their victims; = thug n. 1.
