Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin perōrāt- , perōrāre , -or suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin perōrāt-, past participial stem of perōrāre (see perorate v.) + -or suffix, after orator n. Compare post-classical Latin perorator advocate (c1115 in a British source), spokesman (15th cent. in a British source). Compare also French péroreur a person who is in the habit of perorating (1776).
In early use: †the speaker of an epilogue (obsolete rare). Later: a person who perorates.
