Etymology: < Middle French perpendicle (end of 14th cent.; also Middle French, French †perpendicule (16th cent.)) and its etymon classical Latin perpendiculum plumb line < perpendere perpend v. + -culum -cule suffix; compare -cle suffix. Compare Old Occitan, Occitan perpendicle (c1320), Catalan perpendicle, Spanish perpendículo (1400; earlier as perpendicle (1277; < Catalan or Occitan)), Italian perpendicolo (14th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
