Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ϕιλάνθρωπος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕιλάνθρωπος (adjective) loving humankind (said of gods, men, animals), humane, benign < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + ἄνθρωπος man (see anthropo- comb. form). Compare post-classical Latin philanthropos (1608 or earlier), French philanthrope someone who loves humankind (1712; 1370 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation as phylantropos , plural), someone who strives to improve the lives of others (1810), Italian filantropo (1749 as philantropo ), Spanish filantropo (mid 15th cent. as philantropo , 1494 as philentropo and 1598 in apparently isolated attestations; subsequently from the late 18th cent.). Compare earlier misanthrope n.
A person who practises philanthropy or behaves benevolently and humanely towards others; = philanthropist n.
