Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: proper name Petrarch , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Petrarch (see Petrarchan adj. and n.) + -ism suffix, probably after French pétrarquisme (1842) or Italian petrarchismo (1801). Compare Spanish petrarquismo (1905 or earlier). Compare later Petrarchanism n.
The formal literary style peculiar to or imitated from Petrarch, esp. the Petrarchan sonnet; = Petrarchanism n.
