Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin petreus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin petreus living among rocks (5th cent.), of or relating to St Peter (5th cent. in Augustine), rocky, stony (6th cent.; < classical Latin petra rock, stone (see petro- comb. form1) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -an suffix. Compare classical Latin petraeus growing on or among rocks ( < ancient Greek πετραῖος growing on or among rocks, living on or among rocks, rocky, stony < πέτρα rock + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives). With sense 2 compare French pétré rocky, stony (a1788 in this sense; earlier in sense ‘(of a plant) growing on stones’ (1550 in Middle French)), Spanish pétreo (1537 or earlier in this sense).
