Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin petricola , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin petricola, specific name of a type of mollusc (Lamarck Système des animaux sans vertèbres (1801) 121; < classical Latin petra rock (see petro- comb. form1) + colere to inhabit: see -colous comb. form) + -ous suffix; compare -colous comb. form. Compare French pétricole (noun) a type of mollusc (1801 in Lamarck: see above), (adjective) living on rocks (1868 in Littré).
Zoology. rare.
Inhabiting rock; living on rocks; lithodomous.
