Etymology: < classical Latin petra rock, stone (see petro- comb. form1) + -fact (in artefact n.). Compare post-classical Latin petrefactum , German Petrefakt fossil (both late 18th cent. or earlier). Compare earlier petrifaction n. 2, petrification n. 2, petrifying n. 1.
An object made of stone; (also) an object formed by petrifaction. Also: (figurative) something that has become hardened or fixed.
