Etymology: < petrifact- (in petrifaction n.) + -ive suffix, perhaps after e.g. calefactive adj., putrefactive adj., stupefactive adj.; compare also chylifactive adj., satisfactive adj. Compare slightly later petrescent adj., petrific adj., petrifying adj.
Now rare.
Having the quality of petrifying; causing petrifaction.
